The importance of books to young people and also for fighting poverty with the help of education is being prioritised in this year’s celebration.

Arctic Paper is observing this year’s World Book & Copyright Day for the sixth year through a series of local activities in the company’s various markets.

Throughout time, stories have reflected our history and promoted the progress of humanity. The storyteller’s place in early cultures has gradually been replaced by thinkers, poets and authors, whose stories, since the invention of the printing press, have been spread throughout the world.

It is easy to understand why books are loved and appreciated. A book is accessible, easy to carry and often beautifully designed. Today, when technical developments also allow for digital distribution of stories, it is especially important to preserve the special position of books.

With the World Book & Copyright Day, UNESCO is focusing its attention on the continuing major significance of books with regard to education, and especially for education efforts in developing countries.

Authors, librarians, publishers, teachers, private institutions, the mass media and humanitarian NGOs cooperate with UNESCO every year in celebrating World Book & Copyright Day.

Arctic Paper, Europe's second largest producer of bulk book paper, would
also like to observe the day. For that reason, within Arctic Paper’s various markets, there will be local initiatives that will take place prior to and on World Book & Copyright Day.

The book culture as we know it is dependent on the printed medium. Within Arctic Paper, we believe in and work for the book as a medium. We do this by providing a broad and advanced selection of paper, specially developed by taking into consideration the varying needs that many types of authors, publishers, designers and artists may have - everything from the simple paperback to the beautifully-designed gift or art book.

Within Arctic Paper, environmental aspects are driving factors for paper development that are increasingly important to customers.

“Today, more and more people keep environmental aspects in mind with everything they do. At Arctic Paper we were ahead in our lifecycle and environmental thinking and it is important for us to be able to offer FSC and PEFC certified paper with sustainable forestry as a starting point,” says Hans Karlander, sales and marketing manager at Arctic Paper.

“The printed book is important in so many aspects. Books are friends for life and a constant source of inspiration and understanding for different cultures. It is my conviction that young people who discover the world of books early in their lives grow up to become empathetic human beings with a broader perspective,” says Hans Karlander.

Facts about World Book and Copyright Day
April 23 has become a symbol for world literature. On this date in 1616, the great writers, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. It is also the birthday, or date of death, for other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

It was therefore a natural date to select for UNESCO's General Conference, which was held in Paris in 1995, when a special day for a worldwide tribute to books and authors was introduced. All people, and especially young people, shall have the possibility to discover the joy of reading and learn to see and respect the irreplaceable contributions that authors and publishers provide in regard to social and cultural progress for mankind. For this reason, UNESCO created both World Book and Copyright Day and UNESCO’s Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance.

The purchase, which was made public December 8, 2009, means that Arctic Paper has now acquired all shares in Grycksbo Paper Holding AB from the investment fund, Accent Equity 2003, as well as from minority shareholders.

Arctic Paper’s strategy is to grow both organically and through acquisitions and to take a strong position in the European market for both coated and uncoated fine paper. Following the acquisition, Arctic Paper’s collective production capacity totals over 800,000 tons per year.

The fine paper mill Grycksbo Paper, is located in the region of Dalecarlia, Sweden. The mill’s annual production capacity totals 265,000 tons of coated fine paper. The paper is sold under the mill’s own brand, G-Print, and since last year, also in part under the brand Arctic.

The mill is advanced in regard to environmental work. Heat production is carbon dioxide neutral and the mill’s own electricity production entitles it to be electricity certified. New, efficient transport systems are reducing transport-related CO2-emissions by more than 30% compared with previously. In addition, Grycksbo Paper is now FSC and PEFC certified. These are just some of the many steps the mill has taken towards its goal of becoming Europe’s greenest paper supplier for coated fine paper.

“This acquisition is of great strategic importance for the Group”, says Michał Jarczyński, CEO at Arctic Paper S.A. “The acquisition of Grycksbo Paper will significantly strengthen our market position and allow us to leap ahead in European market share. Our total production capacity will increase with almost 50 %.”

“Through the acquisition of Grycksbo Paper, we are expanding our portfolio of strong brands and improving our position with both printers and wholesalers, publishers and advertising agencies. With the brands G-Print and Arctic, Arctic Paper is now offering the market two levels of quality coated paper that complement each other very well. These qualities, together with our high-quality uncoated papers, means that we can offer our customers an incredibly strong selection,” says Hans Karlander, Sales and Marketing Director at Arctic Paper S.A .

Grycksbo Paper’s existing customers will continue to have access to the mill’s products, but with strengthened marketing support towards its end users as well as increased technical support.

For the European market, the acquisition means that both G-Print and Arctic will henceforth be supplied through Arctic Paper’s sales organization and its stock-keeping partners, as well as through Grycksbo Paper’s stock-keeping partners.

In Scandinavia, the ambition is to continue to market G-Print through existing wholesalers, while the brand Arctic will be sold through Arctic Paper’s own sales organization. The Scandinavian market will consequently get access to an extensive selection of locally produced coated paper.

As of today, Grycksbo Paper will be headed by Managing Director, Per Skoglund. During all of his professional life, Per Skoglund has been active in the Swedish paper industry and the last five years at Arctic Paper, most recently as product manager for coated paper.

In accordance with naming of the other Arctic Paper mills, Grycksbo Paper will in the near future be renamed Arctic Paper Grycksbo.

From its foundation until 1960, handmade paper was manufactured in the Grycksbo mill. Manufacturing was resumed for a few years in connection with the 700th anniversary of Stora Kopparberg AB, in 1988. Now, with the cooperation among Karl-Erik Hedberg, Monica Langwe and Grycksbo Paper, the hand paper mill has started up again. Handmade paper sheets, with and without watermarks, as well as specially bound gift books (guest books and wedding books, for example) are offered.

“Our first order was an exclusive diploma paper with watermarks,” says Karl-Erik Hedberg, who has also manufactured paper for the Nobel Museum and for the Nobel Prize diplomas. “In addition to our manufacturing, we have recently conducted training in handmade paper and watermark production for the only existing Nordic bookbinder education.”

According to Monica Langwe, “We can offer existing and unique products to calligraphers, bookbinders, advertising agencies and paper shops with an exclusive paper assortment as well as exciting bindings.
“Manufacturing of handmade paper is a tradition worth keeping,” says Mikael Frölander, MD Grycksbo Paper. “It is in this tradition that our today’s G-Print has its original roots and it is an important part of the modern Grycksbo Paper history and competence. Apart from the production of handmade paper, courses are arranged and the hand paper mill has become an appreciated and instructive activity in our customer visit programme.”

Arctic Paper acquires 100 percent of the shares of Grycksbo Paper Holding AB, sole owner of the paper mill Grycksbo Paper. The total consideration, comprising cash payment and issue of shares to Accent Equity, is between SEK 590 – 640 million.

Transfer of Grycksbo shares to Arctic Paper S.A. will take place on March 1, 2010. With the purchase, Arctic Paper increases its production capacity to more than 800,000 tonnes per year.

Grycksbo is a fine paper mill in the Dalecarlia region of Sweden. It has an annual production capacity of 260,000 tonnes of coated fine paper and is characterized by high efficiency in terms of both production and energy consumption. Since early 2009 Grycksbo has been producing part of the Arctic branded product range on behalf of Arctic Paper. This already
occupies one fourth of Grycksbo’s capacity.

“Our strategy is growth, both organically and by acquisitions”, says Michał Jarczyński, CEO and President of the Management Board of Arctic Paper S.A. “It is also our strategy to hold strong positions in both the coated and uncoated European fine paper market and we have been interested in acquiring Grycksbo for a long time.”

“Arctic Paper is financially strong. In October this year, we had a successful listing on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Our industry sector has had some difficult years recently and profitability has generally been weak. However, Arctic Paper is highly profitable and our sales are growing. After the third quarter this year we announced a very strong financial result”, says Michał Jarczyński.

“With this acquisition, we will expand our product range and further broaden our array of strong brands. Arctic Paper will even further strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading producers of fine paper and bulky book paper. We will continue to invest in Grycksbo’s highly acclaimed G-Print brand, just as we will in all our other well-known brands, such as Munken, Amber, Pamo, L-Print and the coated paper brand of Arctic”, says Hans
Karlander, Marketing and Sales Director and Member of the Management Board of Arctic Paper S.A.

”When Accent acquired Grycksbo Paper in 2006 the idea was to be active in the restructuring of the fine paper industry. Now Accent has done its part. Grycksbo Paper was too small as a stand alone company going forward. Therefore Grycksbo Paper fits very well into the Arctic Paper family. In addition, Grycksbo will have better access to the capital market, being part of a publicly listed company. This deal brings Grycksbo and its employees the best possible structure to meet the future”, says Jan Ohlsson, CEO of
Accent Equity Partners AB, advisor to Accent Equity 2003.

The main media channel for the award winning campaign is the internet and consists of humorous and surprising film sequences showing people struggling in a paperless world, as well as a campaign website with information and offers.

The PPI Awards are the paper industry’s equivalent to the film industry’s ‘Oscar’ awards. In the PPI Awards 2009, industry companies competed in ten different categories following earlier nominations. Grycksbo Paper was a nominated finalist in three of them: Promotional/Sales/Marketing Campaign of the Year, Business Strategy of the Year, and Environmental Strategy of the Year – Company.

Commenting on the ‘G Print is ON’ campaign’s success the judges said: ‘This winning campaign has been described as outstanding and brilliant by the judges - an entry which shows an impressive marketing strategy, utilising digital media with confidence, while at the same time encouraging increased paper usage. It is a campaign with a clear target audience and specific messages which shows an outstanding breakaway approach."

On receiving the award, Mikael Frölander, MD Grycksbo Paper, said, ‘It is absolutely fantastic that Grycksbo Paper was not only a finalist in three categories, but also that we won one of the most prestigious. It is important to get our message across about the advantages of paper and the printed word, for us, as well as for the whole paper industry.

‘Renewal is needed in the paper industry, so when the idea about a cheeky and humorous campaign using the internet came up, it was a logical step to take. We have got many positive reactions from our customers, as well as from the paper trade.’

Jaana Ahlroos, Sales and Marketing Manager at Grycksbo Paper said, ‘Winning the PPI Awards 2009 for the best Promotional/Sales/Marketing Campaign of the Year is a great honour for us. We are not the biggest paper company, but we were prepared to go outside the traditional box with this, the first digital media promotional campaign in the industry. The saying "Do not go where the path may lead; rather go instead where there is no path and lead a trail" fits us very well.’

The winning campaign’s film sequences showing situations where paper is the only thing that works can be found on the campaign site www.gprint.com/paperaid as well as on YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo.

An important part of the campaign is the support for “The Library Project,” which donates books and libraries to under-funded schools and orphanages in the developing world. On the site visitors can donate money as well as buy T-shirts, with profits going to “The Library Project.”

Grycksbo Paper supports this organisation which donates books and libraries to under-financed schools and orphanages in the developing world. Each day the students blog about their experiences.

“Our interest in ’The Library Project’ started in August when we found its website, Tarlan Oskooie and Jennifer Claesson explain. ”’The Library Project’” " is an organisation, which makes a real difference where the help is most needed in Asia and China. Its strong belief is that education is the key to alleviating poverty and the project’s activities give these children a chance for a better life.

“When we discussed our obligatory third form school project work, we felt from the start that we wanted to do some meaningful work. The opportunity to be volunteers at ’The Library Project‘ for two weeks in China is really exciting. We are blogging every day at www.grycksbopaper.com/paperaid about our experiences. Among other things, we will visit projects in Xi’an, a city of multi-millions of people, to see how the books and library support activities in reality,” concludes Tarkan and Jennifer.

“We were really enthusiastic when Tarlan and Jennifer got in touch with us and wanted to do their school project work about ’The Library Project,’” says Jenny Beckman, marketing co-ordinator at Grycksbo Paper. “A fair amount of the paper we produce is used for books of many kinds, not least for school books. We strongly believe in the printed word and education as means of fighting poverty and we therefore support ’The Library Project.’ The students will see first hand how the support reaches the children who need it and the impact it makes.

“This initiative is an important part of our present campaign ’G-Print is ON.’ We are excited about the fact that many of our European customers actively support ’The Library Project.’ Among other fund-raising activities, T-shirts with the text ’I ♥ PAPER’ are sold and the money donated to ’The Library Project.’ Jenny Beckman concludes.

Unexpectedly, it is the internet, and not the traditional mix of brochures and printed ads, that is the main media channel. The attention raised by the campaign has already meant that it has been nominated in the 2009 PPI Awards for “Marketing Campaign of the Year.” It has also contributed to the nomination of Grycksbo Paper for the Forest Industry’s “Marketing Achievement of the Year” award.

The campaign consists of humorous and surprising film sequences of people struggling in a paperless world and a campaign website with information and offers. The campaign reaches its peak on Paper Awareness Day, a media day with a live internet broadcast.

The film sequences show situations where paper is the only thing that works and have been distributed to partners around Europe. The films can be found on YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo and end with a message and an invitation to visit www.gprint.com/paperaid.

“It might seem strange that a paper maker produces a digital campaign to increase awareness about paper,” Mikael Frölander, MD Grycksbo Paper says. “However, we don’t see it in that way. Digital media are superior to paper for some applications like distributing moving pictures. Equally, paper is superior in many other cases.”

On the campaign site there is information about PaperAid, more films and the abilty to order G-Print material. An important part of the campaign is the support for “The Library Project,” which donates books and libraries to under-funded schools and orphanages in the developing world. On the site visitors can donate money to the project as well as buy T-shirts, with profits going to “The Library Project.”

“It means a lot to ‘The Library Project’ to get direct support and publicity about their activities from the ‘G-Print is ON’ campaign,” Mikael Frölander continues. “Paper is superior to the web when it comes to teaching children how to read as well as for reading in general. We believe that education is the key motivator to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. As we see it, education means change.”

During second half of October, two Swedish students will visit a project run by ‘The Library Project’ in Kina. They will write a blog about their experiences which can be reached through PaperAid's website: http://www.gprint.com/en/paperaid

The awards will take place in Munich on the 28th October. The nominations are in the following categories: Business Strategy of the Year, Promotional / Sales / Marketing Campaign of the Year and the Environmental Strategy of the Year. The PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognising achievements in the pulp and paper industry.

The inaugural PPI Awards will honour leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments of companies, mills and individuals within the sector.

“Since Grycksbo Paper was acquired from Stora Enso in 2006 a lot has happened”, says Mikael Frölander, MD of Grycksbo Paper. “We have a new strategy, established a modern and tailor-made sales and marketing organisation and introduced a more efficient and environmentally improved distribution system. Recently we invested 130 million SEK in a biomass boiler, making us independent of oil as an energy source. Importantly we have become much closer to our customers”.

“We’ve been thrilled with the high quality and number of entries for the first ever PPI Awards, says Mark Rushton, Editor of PPI. The finalists should be justly proud of their achievements. Not only does the PPI Awards event allow us to honour the best in business but it will also offer fantastic networking opportunities for those who attend.”

“It is very encouraging that Grycksbo Paper has been shortlisted in three categories of 2009 PPI Awards. No one has been nominated in more than three categories and to us that is a confirmation that our work to improve all aspects of the company and its services has been noticed internationally”, Mikael Frölander ends.

With an investment of 130 MSEK Grycksbo Paper leaves oil behind as an energy source and takes yet another step towards its vision; “No one greener”.

“This investment is an excellent example of words becoming actions” County Governor of Dalarna Maria Norrfalk said in her inauguration speech. “It is about a true energy change-over, from fossil to renewable sources. The owners of the mill are clearly demonstrating their commitment to creating a reduced environmental impact though switching to a sustainable energy source.”

“A fundamental part of our vision for Grycksbo Paper is “No one greener”. Our aim is to produce our paper in the most environmentally sound way and we work hard to achieve this objective.” Mikael Frölander MD Grycksbo Paper said in his speech. “G-Print is FSC certified, our emissions are very low and our new distribution system reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30 percent compared to our previous system”.

“Our environmental work is an important part of our brand”, Mikael Frölander continued. “Our customers know that they will be able to continue to trust our paper to be one of the best choices on the market with regard to the environment as well as for its high quality”.

“This investment shows that we are committed to our environmental vision. With the new biofuel boiler in operation we have left oil behind as an energy source and our energy requirements are now totally fulfilled through the use of renewable sources”.

The biofuel boiler replaces the previous oil boiler and allows a more sustainable production, both from an environmental and an economical point of view. The investment comprises the new boiler, equipment to handle the biofuel, and a smoke gas cleaning filter, as well as the renovation of a turbine for the production of green electricity.

This demonstrates the company’s commitment to its “No one greener” vision.

In order to be certified according to FSC and PEFC standards, Grycksbo Paper has introduced approved traceability systems to monitor and document its internal flow of pulp. This guarantees that deliveries of paper are certified according to the relevant standards and sourced from sustainable forests.

“Grycksbo Paper has high environmental standards so it is logical that customers who want to buy certified papers should be able to buy them from us,” says Anders Nygårds, Development and Environmental Manager at Grycksbo Paper. “We have an ambitious 39 step environmental programme in place, which will take us towards our vision. The PEFC certification is yet another step that has been taken. For those who are interested, the development process can be followed on our web site www.grycksbopaper.com.

Anders Nygårds continues “For customers such as paper merchants and printers, our certifications mean that provided they have their own traceability systems in place and certified, they can label their printed and converted products and get an advantage in the market”.

“It is important that the customers can buy certified papers according to their own preferences,” says Marcus Westdahl, Sales and Marketing Director at Grycksbo Paper. “As paper manufacturers it is important that the pulp we buy is manufactured from wood from sustainably managed forests. We support both FSC and PEFC certifications and let the customers make their own choices.”

Grycksbo Paper has held the environmental management system certified in accordance with EMAS standards since 1997. Therefore, an EMAS report, covering the mill’s environmental development, the emission levels, the environmental targets as well as their outcome, is published annually.

Specifically, the substances tested and approved are G-Print 100, 115, 130 170, 200 and 250 g/m2, and G-Print Smooth 100, 115, 130 and 250 g/m2.
Performance is evaluated in three aspects: runnability (smooth transport through the machine), fixing (ink-paper interaction) and blanket compatibility (paper influence on blankets). G-Print and G-Print Smooth were evaluated best-performing paper (3 stars) on runnability and fixing, and rated recommended paper (2 stars) on blanket compatibility.
The investment will allow the company to use different fibres in the production of its G-Print coated paper while improving the paper’s overall quality.

Grycksbo Paper was acquired by Accent Equity Partners AB, from Stora Enso in 2006. During its first year under new management one million euro was invested to improve efficiency. Recently, the board decided on further investments, this time to develop the mill’s re-pulping line. The investment comprises a new re-pulper and two refiners. Once finished, additional fibres will be able to be used in the production of G-Print.

“Grycksbo Paper is not an integrated paper mill, so it is necessary to reach a high level of flexibility to enable us to use more types of fibres”, says Mikael Frölander, MD Grycksbo Paper AB.

“G-Print is a unique coated paper, and is manufactured in a patented coating process. Due to this investment we will be able to use other types of pulp, which will improve the key properties of this product, namely a higher bulk and an improved formation.

“Today there is some concern in the wood and pulp markets, due mainly to rising wood costs, and the lack of birch wood as a consequence of the decision to dramatically increase the export duties of Russian birch”, says Mikael Frölander. “New pulp from South America, which predominantly uses eucalyptus, is becoming increasingly prevalent. These fibres need to be treated differently to our Nordic birch and the investment in the re-pulper will allow us to widen the material base that we can use.”

The board has decided to invest 130 million SEK in order to replace the present oil-fed boiler with a biomass boiler, which will meet the paper mill’s entire need for steam when it comes on-line during the second half of 2009. The new boiler will lead to a more sustainable business, both environmentally and economically.

It will be one of the biggest environmental investments during 2009 in the county of Dalarna where Grycksbo Paper is located. The investment comprises: The conversion of the present oil-fuelled boiler into a biomass boiler, a new handling and biofuel storage area, a filter for smoke gas cleaning and renovation of the existing turbine to produce environmentally responsible electricity.

Depending on which biofuel is chosen for the boiler, there may still be some additional investments to come. Currently the mill is looking into the viability of different biofuel alternatives like pellets or woodchips made from branches and treetops. It is important to choose the best combination of flexibility and performance, so that both the mill and customers alike benefit from this substantial investment.

As Grycksbo Paper’s MD Mikael Frölander says “We aim to take a leadership position in our industry and our ‘no one greener’ vision is very important to us, as our aim is to produce G-Print paper in the most environmentally sound way possible,” Frölander continues. “We have been taking steps to become more environmentally responsible for many years now; for example in 2003 we started to use railway transport for G-Print on all destinations possible. We also hold Chain of Custody certification in accordance with FSC regulations. Additionally, our emission levels to both air and water are very low, which we also present in our annual EMAS reports.”

This investment shows that Grycksbo Paper takes its vision seriously it will abandon oil as an energy source when the biomass boiler starts operation, and the mill’s energy needs will be generated from renewable and locally available biofuels. This investment means that the reduction of the mill’s fossil CO2-emissions corresponds to the amount that all 27382 cars in the local municipality of Falun emit over the course of a year when driving an average14,000 kilometres per year.

Another environmental aspect of G-Print paper, which is often forgotten, is how its excellent runnability in customer’s printing presses actually contributes to a better environment. In a recent market study customers gave G-Print top marks for its runnability. In practice this means that the printers produce less waste while also minimising downtime. Savings on resources are always good for the environment and contribute to better customer profitability and productivity.
